God Can’t Help Those Who Help Themselves

CAMP DAY 3 (Tuesday Evening)

The world often quotes the saying, ‘God helps those who help themselves,’ implying that God needs our assistance to accomplish His purposes. However, Scripture teaches us that true spiritual maturity is demonstrated by increasing our dependence on God. This mirrors what Jesus said in Matthew 18:1-4 about being like children, who are forever dependent on their Father.

In the book of Luke 10:38–42, we see the story of Mary and Martha. While Martha busied herself with service, Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet, prioritising communion with Him. We often read the story thinking we have to either be Martha or Mary. Yet we are called to do both. The point Jesus highlighted  is that while our service may be well-meaning, it can become a distraction if it is not aligned to what God desires from us in that moment. Our service must be guided by intimacy with Christ. Martha’s service, though admiral in appearance, became a source of anxiety, pulling her focus away from Jesus and even causing her to question His care. Let our service be at the right place and at the right time!

True surrender is letting go of control and prioritising God’s Will over our own efforts. We struggle to let go because, like Martha, we seek validation through our service, having misplaced priorities instead of seeking first the Kingdom as stated in Matthew 6:33. We become distracted, or perhaps we don’t fully know the One to whom we are letting go to. How can God take control in areas where we are still holding onto control? Letting go is not about being idle but about trusting God to guide us through consistent prayer (see Philippians 4:6-7), leaving our burdens at the feet of Jesus (see 1 Peter 5:7), meditating on His Word, staying in environments that boost our faith and shifting our focus to what is eternal.

Why should you let go? When you release your burdens, new opportunities begin to unfold. On your own, your abilities are limited, and so through surrender, we discover that God, not our efforts, is the source of our strength. Letting go frees you from the weight on your shoulders, allowing you to worship—living a life in total surrender to God—and serve God (see Exodus 7:16). This doesn’t mean embracing laziness; rather, God calls us to be active in our faith.

By letting go and adopting the posture of Mary—being in His presence—you receive clear instructions. We often seek rest in our own ways, but as Psalm 91:1 reminds us, true rest is found in Him. Are you sitting in humility like Mary, or are you standing in the busyness like Martha? Surrendering to Jesus means trusting Him with your journey, as He knows the path ahead, bringing us great peace because He will always lead us in the right direction.

Unlike Uber, His prices are fixed. Unlike Bolt, your safety is certain. Unlike a taxi, He never breaks down. Unlike InDriver, you’ll always find Him. Unlike Google, He will take you straight. Better than WazeSZ, He is the Way! Travelling through life on your own terms will always end in a crash. So when you let go, you will not be unsupported and fall into the air; you are already in His hands! Let the vehicle of your life be led by Jesus Christ!!
